South Xiangtangshan Grotto 7: Portico - Lintel

South Xiangtangshan Grotto 7: Portico

CHINA, Hebei, Handan

The portico of Cave 7 is three bays wide and has four octagonal columns, the capitals of which are decorated with flaming jewels. The two columns at the front are supported by lions, while the bases of the other two columns consist of inverted lotuses. The lintel above the two front columns is carved with apsaras. Imitation wooden bracket sets can be found on either side of the lintel. Swirling clouds are superimposed over an inverted bowl that is decorated with plantain leaves above the eave. This particular design is also found in North Xiangtangshan Grottoes 3, 4, and 9 and South Xiangtangshan Grottoes 3 and 7, as well as the West Grotto of the Shuiyu Temple Grottoes.
