Bezeklik Cave 9: Uighur Nobles as Donors

CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan

These images are located on the north wall of the main chamber. The donors are thought to be Uighur nobility, who became Mongolian officials when the Uighurs acknowledged allegiance to Mongolia.
All three figures have joined palms, with a dagger and pouch hanging from their waist. They have the same physique, fine eyebrows, and small eyes. Each figure wears the traditional Mongolian hairstyle in which a small lock of short hair lays on the forehead and plaits hang behind the ears. The figure in the middle has a mustache and beard. On the right of each figure, there is a cartouche stating Turkic names in Uighur script.
