Shizhongshan Grottoes Niche 6: Vaisravana

CHINA, Yunnan, Dali; Nanzhao to Dali period

Located on the right end of Niche 6, Vaisravana appears barefoot stepping on a yaksa. He wears a headdress and his armor bears an image of a beast with fangs in front of his abdomen. A stole is draped over his arms. A pagoda was once held in his right hand, but is now destroyed; the left hand still holds a trident.
Vaisravana and Mahakala have historically been revered by the Bai ethnic group as protection figures.
