A seated sculpture of Vimalakirti in full lotus position is located in the center of the main niche. The scene is an illustration of the “Chapter on Manjusri’s Visit” in the Vimalakirti Sutra. Vimalakirti has fine facial features and a lean body covered in loose clothing. The right hand is held before the chest, and the left hand holds a whisk on the left leg. Manjusri Bodhisattva and Sariputra are seated on the side walls of the niche, but the upper bodies are damaged beyond recognition. Carvings can be seen on the wall behind Vimalakirti, including a seated miniature Buddha with disciples, musicians with zithers, hunters and shepherds, ascetic practitioners, deer, lions, cranes, monkeys, birds, and other animals.
