Shizhongshan Grottoes Niche 3: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva

CHINA, Yunnan, Dali; Dali Kingdom

Situated in the vicinity of Shizhong Temple, Niche 3 is an arched niche that measures 1.14 m wide, 1.5 m high, and 0.54 m deep. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva wears a hood and gazes downwards. There is an urna on the forehead. The figure is adorned with earrings, a necklace, and a monastic robe. The right hand has been damaged, but it seems likely that it once held a monk’s staff. Meanwhile, the left hand holds a wish-fulfilling jewel before the chest. Seated with legs pendent on a large Sumeru throne, the figure rests its bare feet on lotuses.
