Bingling Temple Cave 3: Seated Bodhisattva

Bingling Temple Cave 3: Seated Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Linxia; Ming dynasty

This mural is located on the upper left corner of the small niche in the lower section of the south wall. The Bodhisattva sits in full lotus position on a square seat, holding lotus stems in both hands. The figure has white skin and black hair piled high upon the head. The face is round and flat, with small features and an urna on the forehead. The Bodhisattva wears a headdress, earrings, armlets, bracelets, anklets, and other body ornaments. A brown stole is draped over the shoulders and in front of the body, and a short lower garment is tied at the waist with a sash. A white, oblong nimbus and a green aureole, outlined with ornamental patterns and knotted white ribbons, are found behind the figure.
