Bingling Temple Cave 6: Standing Bodhisattva

Bingling Temple Cave 6: Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Linxia; Northern Zhou dynasty

This sculpture is located on the south wall of the cave. The Bodhisattva stands barefoot upon a semicircular pedestal, holding a vase and prayer beads. The figure has a round face with a flat forehead, arched eyebrows, and a pointed nose. The small mouth has a slight smile, and the neck is long and slender. The figure wears a short headdress, a necklace, and bracelets. A stole is draped over the shoulders and crossed in front of the abdomen, looping over the seemingly heavy robes which hang to the Bodhisattva’s feet. This sculpture is an excellent example of Northern Zhou dynasty (557–581) Bodhisattva images.
