
Yang Tingguang was a painter skilled in Buddhist imagery, illustrations of sutra, and landscapes. He was renowned alongside the well-known Tang dynasty painter Wu Daozi. Famous Paintings in History records several of his temple murals and landscape paintings. Among them are works done in places such as Ci’en Temple Pagoda, Zisheng Temple, Baocha Temple, Ximing Temple, Xingtang Temple, and Jingshang Temple. In addition, it was documented that he completed a mural alongside Wu Daozi in the inner shrine of Guangzhai Temple. Other works by Yang include Illustration of the Great Tangs Records on the Western Regions, painted along the west corridor of Zhaocheng Temple, and a portrait of Vimalakirti in Shengci Temple.
Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings lists 14 of his paintings; these include Medicine Buddha, Five Bodhisattvas of the Diamond Realm, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva in Contemplation, and Benevolent King Bodhisattva.
