Shuanglin Temple Heavenly King Hall: Dharma Protectors

CHINA, Shanxi, Jinzhong; Ming dynasty

All four Dharma protectors are located in a row along the portico, in front of the hall. Only two are normally in this location but in the Shuanglin Temple, all four are present. They are seated in a variation of relaxation posture, and are distinguished by the length of their muscular legs and vigilant poses. The hair is tied in a topknot and secured by an ornamental crown. The single-bladed vajra they carry is supported in one hand by its pommel, although in one case it is held reversed. The figures wear skirts and stoles, and two are bare-chested.
