Wutaishan Nanchan Temple Main Hall: Kneeling Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Shanxi, Xinzhou; Tang dynasty

These statues are located in front of the Buddha within the main hall. The Bodhisattvas wear floral crowns, with locks of hair curling down behind their ears. Their necklaces have a floral design and their bare torsos are draped by wide stoles. Their urnas that probably once featured precious stones are now only indentations, while the black stones defining their eyes are still in place. The figures are on one knee and gesturing with their damaged hands. The right hands are probably raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra.
