Yulin Cave 6: Donors

Yulin Cave 6: Donors

CHINA, Gansu, Guazhou; Yuan dynasty

This mural, located on the left side of the west wall within the antechamber, features a male and female figure, both with Mongolian characteristics. The mural is most likely a portrayal of a couple engaged in Dharma practice in their home. This type of subject matter first appeared during the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368).
The male figure on the left wears a robe with a crossed collar, narrow sleeves, and a belt tied at the waist, as well as a lotus headdress and earrings. The arms are crossed in front of the chest and a vajra is held in each hand. The female figure on the right wears a coronet and a robe with a red and white crossed collar and wide sleeves. The figure wears earrings and holds vajras in both hands. Both of the figures sit with legs crossed upon a rectangular seat with a vertical backrest. A servant stands on each side, both of whom wear conical hats, earrings, and robes with crossed collars. One is dressed in green and the other in brown.
A central Buddha flanked by two eminent monks is depicted above the main figures. The Buddha sits in full lotus position upon a lotus throne and is drawn in the Vajrayana style. The two monks wear capes and are also seated in full lotus position upon lotus thrones.
