Yulin Cave 10: Winged Horses

CHINA, Gansu, Guazhou; Western Xia period

These images are located on the western slope of the ceiling. Both winged horses are painted in white with blue wings, surrounded by two-toned blue flames. They are depicted in animated, vivid poses: one appears to be dashing forward, while the other flies with its head turned back. The fine detailing of the musculature, facial features, and proportion of these creatures makes them particularly notable.
