Yulin Cave 25: Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and Attendants

Yulin Cave 25: Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and Attendants

CHINA, Gansu, Guazhou; Tang dynasty

This mural is located on the left side of the entrance, on the front (west) wall of the main chamber. The image depicts Samantabhadra seated upon a white elephant and surrounded by attendants. The layout of the mural and the depiction of the Bodhisattva and attendants is similar to the illustration of Manjusri on the right side of the entrance.
Lotus flowers are beneath the feet of the elephant, and beside it a mahout raises a whip to urge the animal forward. The fine line drawing and smooth strokes in this image reflect skillful artistry.
