Yulin Cave 25: Standing Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Gansu, Guazhou; Tang dynasty

These images are located on the north wall of the main chamber, on both sides of the illustration of the Sutra on the Descent of Maitreya. Each figure is depicted standing on a lotus pedestal with a canopy over the head. The figure on the left panel is Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, wearing a headdress decorated with a Buddha, a high topknot, and hair draped over the shoulders. The Bodhisattva holds a willow branch in one hand and a vase in the other.
The figure on the right panel wears a three-flowered headdress and a high topknot with pieces of hair draped down the shoulders. The face is full and round and has a focused expression. The arms are held in front of the chest. The Bodhisattva is clothed in a crimson lower garment and a green stole.
