Shaolin Temple First Patriarch Temple: Dharma Protectors

CHINA, Henan, Zhengzhou; Song dynasty

These are rubbings of the engravings on a reliquary casket found in the First Patriarch Temple at Shaolin Temple. A dragon surrounded by scrolling floral patterns is engraved on the top of the casket. Inscribed prayers can be seen at the top of the picture. On each of the four sides of the casket, there are pairs of Dharma protectors dressed in flowing stoles and armor. Each Dharma protector is accompanied by an attendant yaksa or heavenly being. A stone platform topped with a vessel or vase of flowers rests in the middle of the images. The lively figures are depicted with neat, smooth lines evidently made by a skilled engraver.
