Dazu Rock Carvings Baodingshan Great Buddha Bay Niche 2: Dharma Protectors

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu; Southern Song dynasty

Situated in the eastern section of the south cliff, this niche has a flat rectangular ceiling and a width of 12.6 m, a height of 4.5 m, and a depth of 1.2 m.
The niche has two tiers, with nine Dharma protectors across the center of the upper tier. The average height of the statues is 2.3 m. All of the Dharma protectors are barefoot, wear armor, and have wrathful, fierce expressions. Seven demons are carved on the lower part of the niche, under the feet of the Dharma protectors. The average height of the demons are 1.1 m.
