Dazu Rock Carvings Miaogaoshan Cave 4: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattvas (right wall)

Dazu Rock Carvings Miaogaoshan Cave 4

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu

This cave has a width of 3.09 m, a height of 3.39 m, and a depth of 4.01 m. It features an Amitabha Buddha Triad on the back wall, and carvings of standing Bodhisattvas on the side walls. The central Amitabha Buddha wears a partially open monastic robe that covers both shoulders. Amitabha sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne, forming the dhyana (meditation) mudra with both hands. Three lions are carved on the octagonal platform that supports the Buddha’s lotus throne. Flanking Amitabha are Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas, each sitting in full lotus position on raised platforms. Apsaras kneeling on clouds are located in the upper corners of the back wall; they wear robes and ornaments, have flowers in their hair, and are draped with drifting stoles.
Ten Bodhisattvas, all of whom appear to be Avalokitesvara, are spread evenly on the side walls. The innermost statue on the right wall holds a jewel in one hand and forms a mudra with the other. The middle two figures once either made gestures or held objects. The fourth Bodhisattva holds prayer beads. Unfortunately, the outermost statue has completely worn away. The figures on the left wall each carry an object: the innermost Bodhisattva holds a mirror; the next, a bowl; the third, a coiled rope; the fourth, a vase and willow branch; and the fifth, a lotus. Each of the Bodhisattvas stand barefoot on a lotus pedestal. They wear various styles of headdresses, neck ornaments, bracelets, and robes.
