Maijishan Grotto 159: Donors

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Northern Wei dynasty

These four donor figures are located in the bottom tier on the left side of the Buddha on the back wall. From the right, the first figure depicts a monk in a dark robe holding a vase in the left hand with the right hand held at the chest. The last three figures portray laymen with high headdresses. Each donor is accompanied by an inscription, which read, from right to left, “monk Guo making an offering to the Buddha,” “deceased father, Li Daosheng making an offering,” “deceased brother, A She, making an offering to the Buddha” and “deceased brother, A Kuo.” The head of the third figure is missing.
