Maijishan Grotto 123: Manjusri Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Western Wei dynasty

This Manjusri Bodhisattva statue is in the left wall niche opposite the Vimalakirti statue in the right wall niche. Wearing an inner robe with an overlapping collar and an outer robe that covers both shoulders, Manjusri sits in full lotus position on a square throne. A sash hangs over the chest with a knot at the center. Stoles hang from epaulets on the shoulders. The robe drapes close to the body and trails over the throne. The palm of Manjusri’s right hand is held at waist level. The statue’s colorful paint is still intact, although the paint on the aureole and nimbus has flaked off.
