Maijishan Grotto 102: Vimalakirti

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Western Wei dynasty

This Vimalakirti is seated on a stone throne on the right wall, opposite a Manjusri Bodhisattva statue on the left wall, illustrating their encounter in the Vimalakirti Sutra. With a rolled-brim hat, Vimalakirti appears young and confident while gazing upon Manjusri Bodhisattva. Vimalakirti’s left hand is placed on the lap and although missing, the right hand was likely set before the chest and displayed a mudra. The robe flows down over the stone throne. The statue is carved in high relief. An attendant figure stands to the right of Vimalakirti, and another once stood on the left.
