Maijishan Grotto 20

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui

Grotto 20 is located in the middle section on the west side of the east cliff. The rectangular grotto has a flat ceiling. The damaged portico and right wall date to the Western Wei dynasty (535–556). A seated clay Buddha flanked by two Bodhisattvas is on the back wall. On the right wall, there is also a seated Buddha.
Seated on a rectangular throne, the Buddha at the back wall is 1.28 m in height and has a tall usnisa. With eyes slightly opened, the smooth and round face evokes a friendly expression. The outer monastic robe covers both of the Buddha’s shoulders and drapes over the throne. The inner robe is tied at the chest. Although damaged, the right hand forms the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra, while the left hand makes the varada (wish-granting) mudra. Avalokitesvara is on the right side of the Buddha and Mahasthamaprapta is on the left, each 40 cm in height. An iron rod used to support the sculpture protrudes from the topknot of Mahasthamaprapta. Each of the Bodhisattvas is adorned with a tall headdress, a necklace, and other jewelry. Mahasthamaprapta also holds a circular ornament. Their thin lips have a slight smile and the cheeks are round and fleshy.
The Buddha on the right wall is 1.21 m in height and is seated in full lotus position on a stone throne. The face has a gentle and compassionate expression. The robe covers both shoulders and drapes over the throne. The hands, with the right hand placed on top of the left hand, rest on the Buddha’s lap. The exposed right foot is damaged.
