Maijishan Niche 94: Buddha, Disciples, and Bodhisattvas (back wall)

Maijishan Niche 94

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui

This Sui dynasty (581–618) grotto, with an arched entrance and vaulted ceiling, is located on the west side of the west cliff. There is a Buddha, 93 cm in height, seated in full lotus position at the back wall. An outer monastic robe, with an inner robe underneath, covers the Buddha’s shoulders. The outer robe trails slightly over the edge of the rectangular throne. The Buddha forms the dhyana (meditation) mudra. The nimbus is adorned with a honeysuckle pattern. On both sides of the Buddha stand two disciples and two attendant Bodhisattvas. The disciples appear as young monks, and the Bodhisattvas are adorned in stoles, jewelry, long hanging ornaments, and lower garments.
