Maijishan Grotto 4: Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Sui dynasty

Seven niches are constructed on the portico’s facade. There are two Bodhisattva statues on each side of the niches, as well as on both sides of the Buddha statue in Niches 3 and 5. Most of the statues were restored in the Song dynasty (960–1279) and the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), when they were re-sculpted in the sculptural style of the Sui dynasty (581–618). The walls between the chambers contain colored and gilded inscriptions from the Ming dynasty.
This Bodhisattva statue is located adjacent to the right wall of Grotto 4’s Niche 6 and is one of the more exquisite statues. Embellished with ornamentation, the Bodhisattva’s hair with a high topknot is adorned with a headdress.
