Mogao Cave 412: Standing Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty

Two statues remain enshrined within this cave, one on the south wall and another along the north wall. The two statues were most likely attendant Bodhisattvas in two Buddha triads. The Bodhisattva standing on the right side of the north wall wears a long, diaphanous garment. Although most of the colors have faded, intricate patterns remain visible. This round-faced Bodhisattva has broad shoulders and a raised left hand with a lotus held in the palm. The Bodhisattva gazes downward in contemplation and the features suggest a gentle countenance.
