Mogao Cave 299: Syama Jataka

Mogao Cave 299: Syama Jataka

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Zhou dynasty

This illustration of the Syama Jataka on the north, east, and south slopes surrounds the ceiling of the main chamber. It begins on the west slope with a scene of the king of Kapilavastu in his palace. On the east slope shows the king out hunting, whereupon he accidentally shoots the young boy Syama. Syama lived in a mountain hermitage with his blind parents and selflessly cared for their needs. On the north slope, the king visits the blind parents of the now deceased Syama. On the east slope, Syama is resurrected by heavenly beings. The mural is plainly drawn and brightly colored. The northeast portion is damaged.
