Mogao Cave 328: Mahakasyapa

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This statue is enshrined to the right of the Buddha within the back (west) wall niche in the main chamber. The disciple Mahakasyapa is portrayed as an elderly monk with a long face, furrowed brows, and thin lips that are slightly parted, showing his teeth. He wears a patchwork robe with numerous folds and his palms are joined in anjali (reverence) mudra. The figure stands on a lotus pedestal.
