Mogao Cave 320: Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This statue is on the right side within the niche on the back (west) wall. The Bodhisattva wears a high topknot and various ornaments, including a necklace, armlets, and bracelets. A stole is draped across the bare upper torso, and a long lower garment with simple, sparse folds is tied at the waist. The head of the Bodhisattva is turned to one side, and the right hand is held in front of the chest with the thumb and forefinger touching. The figure stands barefoot on a lotus pedestal in tribhanga pose. The delicate sculpting is expressed in the carefully defined eyes, subtle smile, and the slightly bulging abdomen.
