Mogao Cave 217: Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This image is painted to the left of the back (west) wall niche within the main chamber. The standing Mahasthamaprapta wears an elaborate crown, a necklace, and bracelets. The Bodhisattva is clothed in long, flowing garments embroidered with intricate patterns, and a thin stole is draped over the arms. The figure stands attentively, the hands clasped before the abdomen. The delicate clothing and body ornaments are highlighted with strong lines and vivid colors, giving the figure an elegant, dignified appearance.
