Mogao Cave 172: Illustration of the Amitayurdhyana Sutra - Bodhisattva in Contemplation

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

Located on the right side of the illustration of the Amitayurdhyana Sutra on the north wall in the main chamber, the Bodhisattva is rendered in a contemplative pose, wearing a headdress and necklace. The face is turned slightly and is supported by the right hand, while the left hand rests on the knee. The Bodhisattva is seated cross-legged on a lotus throne within a pavilion. Outside is a garden and flowing water. The peaceful scene mirrors the calm and meditative appearance of the Bodhisattva.
