Mogao Cave 45: Illustration of the Lotus Sutra - Universal Gateway Chapter - Rescuing Merchants from Raksasas at Sea

This detail is located on the lower right section of the mural illustrating the “Universal Gateway Chapter” of the Lotus Sutra. A group of merchants struggle against makaras and raksasas at sea. A ship in stormy waters is located at the center of the illustration. Several makaras wait with mouths agape behind the ship, and in front is a group of raksasas. Several people aboard attempt to steer the boat, while one figure joins palms and chants Avalokitesvara’s name. Above them is a cartouche containing the title and a description of the lively scene.
