Longmen Grotto 565: Maitreya Buddha

CHINA, Henan, Luoyang; Tang dynasty

This Maitreya Buddha is located on the back (west) wall of the grotto. In the outer layer of the nimbus are the Seven Buddhas of the Past. Maitreya has a full face, high usnisa, and a short neck with three lines. A double-collared monastic robe worn over an inner robe drapes over the throne. Both hands are placed on the knees, the left palm faces upward while the right palm faces down. On front of Maitreya’s stone footrest there are three small niches that house Buddhas seated in full lotus position on lotus thrones. The left side niche is heavily damaged. Shallow reliefs of various patterns are carved on the wall behind Maitreya.
