Longmen Grotto 403: Amitabha Buddha

CHINA, Henan, Luoyang; Tang dynasty

This seated Amitabha Buddha is centered on the rear chamber’s back (west) wall. The Buddha has a nimbus and mandorla. The original head was removed and later replaced. The Buddha’s face is round, and the neck is short and thick. The sturdy body is clad in a monastic robe over an inner garment. The damaged right hand is raised to the side of the chest, while the left is positioned before the knee. The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on an octagonal lotus throne, the front of which is covered by the robe. Lion reliefs are depicted on either side of the throne.
