Mogao Cave 45: Ananda

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This sculpture from the High Tang period (712–756) is located to the left of the main Buddha image in the back (west) wall niche of the main chamber. Ananda is depicted as a young monk with a round face and handsome features. He wears red and green robes, his hands are linked in front of the abdomen, and his hips lean slightly to one side. He stands barefoot upon a lotus pedestal.
