The Bodhisattva is seated with hands in the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. Long flower stalks wind along the arms to bloom at shoulder height behind the figure and support Manjusri’s attributes of a sword and a sutra scroll. The figure wears an ornate crown so large that it doubles as a nimbus, from which banner-like, multicolored ribbons hang down from side pieces. A large urna dominates the figure’s forehead. Dressed in brocades and seated on a throne, the ornate aureole behind the figure is decorated with mythical creatures.
