Niujiaozhai Rock Carvings Niche 30: Maitreya Buddha

CHINA, Sichuan, Meishan; Tang dynasty

This Maitreya Buddha statue was originally sculpted with a head, neck, and shoulders that together created a bust equaling 12.4 m in height. The 6.3 m head remains, although the upper body is weathered and overgrown almost beyond recognition. The sculpture was designed to be 20 m in height, but cutting was halted probably due to the quality of the rock on the lower section. The heavily weathered statue was constructed at about the same time as the Leshan Great Buddha. The years of construction have been estimated, based on the inscriptions from Niches 10 and 40 in front the Buddha statue, to lie between 749 and 795 during the Tang dynasty.
